Frequently Asked Questions
Questions, answered.
If you're considering counselling but have questions first, you're in good company. Here are the questions we hear most often. If yours isn't here, get in touch.
Do I need a GP referral to see a counsellor?
No, you do not need a GP referral to access counselling at Mind Healing Counselling. You can contact us directly, book online, or claim your 50% off first session without any referral.
How much does counselling cost in Ireland?
Our first sessions are currently offered at 50% off through our promotional link. Standard session rates and programme pricing vary and are shown clearly at the point of booking.
How quickly can I be seen?
Most new clients are seen within 7 days of their first enquiry. Evening & weekend appointments are available across Ireland.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes, everything discussed in counselling is strictly confidential. Our counsellors adhere to the codes of ethics of APCP and BACP. The only exceptions are where there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or where required by law, these limits are explained fully in your first session.
How many counselling sessions will I need?
Most clients see significant improvement within 9 to 12 sessions. Our structured 12-week programmes for anxiety, depression, trauma, and anger management are designed around this timeframe. For more complex or long-standing difficulties, longer-term work produces better outcomes.
What happens in the first counselling session?
The first session is about getting to know each other. Your counsellor will ask about what brought you in, what you'd like to work on, and your background. You'll have space to ask questions about the approach, confidentiality, and practical matters. There's no pressure to disclose more than you're comfortable with.
Are online counselling sessions as effective as in-person?
Research consistently shows online counselling is as effective as in-person therapy for most issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma. Around 95% of our clients prefer online sessions for their privacy, convenience, and flexibility. Sessions run over a secure video connection.
What qualifications do Mind Healing Counselling counsellors have?
Every Mind Healing Counselling counsellor holds a Counselling and Psychotherapy Honours Degree, with most also holding specialist post-graduate qualifications. All therapists are registered members of APCP (Association of Professional Counsellors and Psychotherapists in Ireland) and/or BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). Membership requires ongoing supervision, continuing professional development, and adherence to a strict code of ethics.
What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling tends to focus on specific current issues and is often shorter-term, while psychotherapy explores deeper patterns and long-standing difficulties. In practice the distinction is blurred and most qualified therapists are trained in both. At Mind Healing Counselling we match the approach to your needs rather than the label.
What therapeutic approach do you use?
All our counsellors are integrative therapists, qualified in multiple evidence-based modalities including CBT, person-centred therapy, psychodynamic approaches, mindfulness-based therapy, and trauma-focused approaches. Your therapist draws on whichever approach fits your situation best, rather than making you fit a single method.
What's your cancellation policy?
We ask for 48 hours notice for cancellations. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours notice, or missed without notice, may be charged at the full session fee. We understand emergencies happen and will always try to be flexible where possible.
