Anger Management Counselling

Understand your triggers, interrupt the patterns, and respond to situations with clarity rather than reactivity. Evidence-based anger therapy delivered Ireland-wide.

Who this is for

Common presentations we work with

If any of these feel familiar, you're in the right place. Every client's story is different, and we'll tailor the approach to yours.

  • Outbursts you regret afterwards
  • Road rage or reactivity in small situations
  • Damaging relationships with family or partner
  • Physical symptoms, tension, clenched jaw, headaches
  • Feeling triggered by perceived disrespect
  • Anger that comes out of nowhere
  • Impact on work, driving, or parenting
  • Coming from a family where anger ran high

Anger is a signal, not the problem

Anger itself is a healthy human emotion. It tells you something has been crossed: a boundary, a value, a sense of fairness. The problem isn’t the feeling; it’s the pattern that forms around it. When anger becomes the default response to stress, hurt, fear, or overwhelm (or when the volume is wildly out of proportion to the situation), it starts costing you relationships, health, and self-respect.

Most men who come to us for anger management aren’t angry people. They’re people carrying stress, unprocessed hurt, or fear they’ve never had space to feel safely. Anger is where it shows up because it’s often the only emotion they were allowed to have.

What anger therapy actually involves

This is not a “calm down” class. Anger management therapy works because it addresses three layers at once:

The physiological layer: when anger hits, your body is in fight response. Heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, tunnel vision. We teach practical tools to recognise these signals early and interrupt the cascade before it peaks. These skills work fast, often in the first few sessions.

The cognitive layer: what interpretations are happening in the split-second before rage arrives? What do you make “disrespect” mean? What stories about yourself, others, or fairness are being activated? CBT and schema therapy techniques work well here.

The underlying layer: what sits beneath the anger? For many clients, anger is covering stress that has nowhere else to go. For others, it’s covering hurt, grief, fear, or shame. This is the deeper work, and it’s often where real change happens.

Our 12-week Anger Management Mastery Programme

Our structured Anger Management Mastery Programme follows a clear pathway:

  • Early weeks: learn to recognise triggers and interrupt reactivity in the moment
  • Middle weeks: understand your patterns, where they came from, what they’re covering
  • Closing weeks: build sustainable responses, repair relationships where helpful, prevent relapse

Most clients see meaningful change within 9-12 sessions. Partners, family members, and colleagues usually notice the change before the client does.

For men especially

Men make up the majority of our anger management clients, partly because anger is often the most culturally acceptable emotion for men to express. If you’ve been told (or told yourself) that you “have a temper,” you’re not broken. You’re carrying things that need somewhere to go, and anger is the only exit route that was ever modelled to you.

Therapy offers other routes.

A note on safety

If your anger is causing you to physically harm people, if you feel unsafe in your own reactions, or if others are unsafe around you, please reach out to your GP or Samaritans (116 123) immediately. For ongoing change, therapy is the right place, but safety first.
