What anxiety actually is, and why it’s treatable
Anxiety is your nervous system on high alert. It’s designed to protect you. The problem isn’t that it exists; it’s that it can become stuck in the ‘on’ position, firing in situations where there’s no real threat, a meeting, a phone call, a quiet evening at home.
Left unchecked, it narrows your life. You start avoiding what triggers it, and the world shrinks. The good news: anxiety is one of the most treatable mental health conditions. With the right support, most people see meaningful reduction in symptoms within 9-12 sessions.
How we work with anxiety
Our approach to anxiety draws on multiple evidence-based modalities, because anxiety doesn’t present the same way in any two people. For some clients, practical CBT techniques for identifying thought patterns and breaking the anxiety cycle are what’s needed. For others, the work is deeper, looking at early experiences, relational patterns, and the beliefs about yourself that have been feeding the anxiety for years.
In practice, a typical course of anxiety therapy with us looks like:
First few weeks: stabilisation. We focus on grounding techniques, breathing work, and practical tools to reduce the acute physical sensations. Quick wins that give you back some control.
Middle weeks: understanding. What are the patterns? When does anxiety fire? What’s underneath it? This is where we do the deeper work, often combining CBT’s structure with the space for genuine exploration.
Closing weeks: integration and prevention. Building a personalised toolkit so that when stressors appear in future (and they will), you have strategies ready. Not just to survive them, but to stay genuinely well.
CBT, yes, but not only CBT
Many people search for “CBT for anxiety” and assume that’s what they need. CBT is excellent, evidence-based, and genuinely helpful for anxiety. But it’s one tool, not the whole toolkit. If all your therapist has is CBT, they’ll use it for everything, even when something else would serve you better.
Our counsellors are integrative therapists. That means they’re trained in CBT and in person-centred work, and in psychodynamic approaches, and in mindfulness-based therapy. They use whichever fits the moment, the client, and the underlying issue.
When to reach out
You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from anxiety counselling. If anxiety is getting in the way of living how you want to live, if you’re avoiding things, losing sleep, feeling physically unwell from worry, or simply tired of carrying it, that’s reason enough.
A first session at half price is a low-commitment way to find out whether this kind of support is right for you.
