Stress isn’t the enemy, chronic stress is
Short bursts of stress are part of being human. They help you perform, meet deadlines, rise to challenges. The problem is when stress becomes chronic, when the system that was designed for short-term response stays switched on for weeks, months, or years.
Chronic stress changes your body. It disrupts sleep, suppresses immune function, raises blood pressure, narrows your perspective, and wears away at relationships. Left unaddressed, it’s often the pathway into anxiety, depression, or physical illness.
How we work with stress
Stress therapy at Mind Healing Counselling isn’t about teaching you breathing exercises (though those help). It’s about understanding why stress has become chronic for you specifically, and what needs to change, in your circumstances, your mindset, your boundaries, or your relationship with work.
Our approach combines practical stress-management skills with deeper work on the patterns that keep stress recurring. For some clients the issue is cognitive, perfectionism, catastrophising, a harsh internal voice. For others it’s behavioural, never saying no, always being available, running on empty. For many it’s environmental, genuinely too much on their plate with too little support.
Assessment phase: we look honestly at what’s happening. Your workload, relationships, sleep, physical health, sense of meaning. Stress is rarely about one thing.
Intervention phase: building practical tools that work for your life. Mindfulness-based stress reduction, cognitive techniques to manage thought patterns, assertiveness work for those who struggle to set limits, and honest conversations about what’s sustainable and what isn’t.
Consolidation phase: establishing practices that prevent relapse. Because the goal isn’t to survive the next deadline; it’s to build a working life you don’t need to recover from.
When stress is really anxiety
Stress and anxiety overlap significantly. Some clients who come to us for “stress management” are actually experiencing generalised anxiety disorder, and benefit most from our structured Anxiety Recovery Programme. Your first session will help us understand which fits you best.
You deserve to feel well
Stress has become so normalised in Irish working life that many people don’t recognise how much they’re carrying until it starts affecting their health, relationships, or ability to function. If you recognise yourself in what you’ve read, it’s worth a conversation. A first session at half price is a good starting point.
Our Integrative Approach
Modalities your therapist may draw on
